Ontario’s Celebration Zone for the Pan Am Games Opened Today at Toronto’s Harbourfront

The 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games opened today in Toronto. Millions watched the opening ceremony as Canada welcomed thousands of athletes from the nations of the Americas to this major sporting event.

The Pan American Games are the world's third largest international multi-sport Games; they are only surpassed in size and scope by the Summer Olympics and the Asian Games.

In partnership with the Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corporation (OTMPC), the Government of Ontario commissioned the construction of a Celebration Zone to highlight Ontario’s incredible diversity, culture and heritage during the Games. The Celebration Zone is accessible and free for the public. It showcases Ontario tourism, business, sport, culture, innovation and achievements through experiential programming including live entertainment featuring Ontario artists, a 400ft zipline, interactive exhibits, culinary demonstrations and tourism information.

The zone features two custom inflatable pavilions built by Tectoniks working with Hariri Pontarini Architects, Thornton Tomasetti and Blackwell Structural Engineers. The large pavilion, which covers an area of over 10,000 square feet, and its smaller companion, covering an area of 3,000 square feet, are made up of more than 15,000 unique fabric panels. Despite their size, they were installed in just 2 days in the week running up to the start of the Games.
